Since 2006 LEDshine operates as a developer, manufacturer and seller of LED lights for the business market. To customers in the Netherlands and abroad, we provide high quality and innovative LED products which are an alternative to traditional lighting. We distinguish ourselves by:

  • In-house development and engineering. This ensures that all our products meet the requirements in terms of electrical safety, light output and life;

How to choose LED

LED lighting is rapidly emerging as a replacement for conventional lighting. That increase has resulted in a huge growth in the number of suppliers of LED lights that show the potential and the advantages of LED lighting. But how can a non-expert make a decision between all the products and vendors available in the market?

Important criteria in selecting the appropriate LED lights:


• Does the provider or distributor develop and it also produces LED lights themselves, or are they merely passing through products from others. The quality of the components used, and the light degradation over the lifetime of the LED lamp are very important selection criteria. Succes is very dependent on getting the proper components ( LED chips / drivers / optics, the correct engineering ( proper heat management)), and limited load on the LED chips. Suppliers that also engineer and manufacture the LED lamps and fixtures can explain to you the essence of the components and engineering. Wholesellers only have limited knowledge and therefore are not capable of determining whether the lamps and fixtures are really of sufficient quality;
• Substantive knowledge of the supplier in the field of LED development and applications. It is always wise to ask for an interview to discuss the specific situation. The use of LED lighting requires the necessary knowledge of the potential of LED lighting, the use of LEDs in a specific situation and the necessary calculations to support proposals.
• What Certifications are avaiable? In Europe normally CE, RoHs are minimum requirements. Subsequently per individual country there are also local Certifications such as TüV , Dekra or KEMA. Near lately ENEC05 is becoming more and more the generally accepted european standard for LED Certification. Outside Europe other Certifications such as ETL, UL or other local Certification can apply. Please ensure that the Certificates provided by your vendor are genuine. Many, especially asian vendors have Certificates that are fake. No testing has ever been performed;
• Factory warranty and the assurance for this. A 5 year warranty is becoming the industry standard. Obviously a 5 year warranty is useless when the vendor is not expected to even exist anymore within the next 5 years.
• Supply Continuity.

Buying LED lamps and fixtures can be a major investment. It is important to calculate the payback time of this investment. On average the payback time about 1 to 3 years, but is strongly dependent on the type of LED bulb, the future number of hours, and the price they paid for the energy.

About LED

Russian scientist Oleg Losev discovered in the mid-20s diodes which emit light when a current is passed through it. In 1927 he published in a Russian journal details of the first LED and applied for a patent. Losev's work remained unnoticed, and only forty years later, in 1962, the American physicist Nick Holonyak developed the first working LED, but the light output was low, the LED expensive and only a few specific colors were available. The road to higher performance, lower costs and a wider color gamut was long and difficult, but well reported.During the early 60s a number of US companies such as Texas Instruments, IBM, and Hewlett Packard actively focussed on LEDs. This in turn led to the development of the first alpha-numeric displays which were used in calculators and wrist watches. IBM began around the same time with the use of LED circuit boards of computers. It was a significant progress here: the first offered LEDs compared to conventional lighting technology an attractive alternative to both manufacturers and end users. They consumed less power and had a very long life, some maintenance unnecessary. High capacity production lines subsequently decreased production costs significantly.In the 90s scientists booked major breakthroughs in technology and development of white LED chips. Thanks to these developments full color palette LED chips could soon replace traditional lighting in all kinds of electronic devices. Think of mobile phones and other electronic devices. Further development of LED technology has resulted in even more energy economical-, more powerful and more durable LED chips, thus enabling the replacement of traditional  indoor and outdoor lighting.

 

LED Surface

 

A LED is a resistor in which direct current electricity (DC) can only flow in one direction.  Because of the resistance both light and heat is produced in the diode. In a conventional light bulb for example the distribution is 10% of the light and 90% of the heat. LED has a much more favorable distribution of about 80% of the light and 20% heat.This means that LED thus still produces heat, but significantly less than with traditional lights. At the front the LED chip light is produced, at the back it is about 75-80 degrees Celsius, although with so much less energy than traditional bulbs. However, this heat has to be dissipated. This is done via the cooling ribs, also referred to as the "heat sink". The LED is often driven by a transformer, a rectifier and a small control chip. Such an arrangement is also referred to as the "driver". This driver can function optimally between a temperature range of -25 up to +40 degrees Celcius.

 

Structure of a LED lamp

 

The color temperature of lamps is very important for the perception of light. Therefore, in the development of LED much attention is spent to obtaining the correct color temperature. At first LEDs (the bullet LEDs) were red, yellow and blue light (RGB) and mixed in a particular composition in order to get the right color temperature. Often, however, one color was so dominant that not the correct effect was achieved. In many cases with the result that the light was experienced being very blue and cold.The new generation of LEDs, inside the protective cover from the LED chip, among others is coated with phosphor powder. The amount of powder provided for the extent of adsorption of the light, so that the various temperature colors can be produced quite accurate.The life span of high-quality LED lamps is considerably higher than the lifetime of traditional bulbs such as incandescent, halogen or fluorescent. The main reason for this is the considerably lower temperature. If the right LED chips, heatsink, and driver used, LED will last for about 50 to even100,000 hours without any problems.
